Program of Theoretical Dialogues

I INTERNATIONAL CARIBBEAN TRIENNIAL
Santo Domingo, 2010
Art + Environment
Dialogues Program

September 1st to October 24th, 2010.

The I International Caribbean Triennial is conceived as a unique platform for the empowerment of contemporary art and artists in the Caribbean and Central America.

The ICT/2010 is proposed as a new commitment for a multicultural dialogue. The Triennial proposes a constructive, open, reflective, poetic, transparent, alive, purposeful, fraternal dialogue from and through the imagination, sensitivity and creativity of those vibrant spiritual latitudes. It focuses especially on artists whose proposals consider the facts that they share an intensive questioning about the multiple elements that make up the complex identities and contemporary social realities, as well as a major concern for the harmful effects resulting from the spiraling degradation of human groups, are inflicting on biodiversity and the environment, This effect at times through the warped processes of exploitation, “development” and consumption of nonrenewable natural resources, and often in many other unconscious ways. It is precisely within this framework that raises these dialogues, lectures, and panels that are part of the ICT/2010. The following program will be developed alongside the exhibition, and consists of four core elements:

Biennials, Triennials, CONTESTS: How they function today

Since their foundations, the Biennials, Triennials, Competitions and other events of a similar nature have prompted dialogues, debates and controversies within Dominican society. This, an institutional effect of its own existence, makes evident which kinds of contests act as accelerators of the country’s art scene.

These events promote criteria of “dissemination” of art and structuring reasoning on certain practices and initiatives of the recuperation of models that allow the establishment of a link between cultural production, the creators and thinkers of the region.

ART AND ENVIRONMENT:

What’s currently happening? How Contemporary Art proposes the current state of this relationship?

The axes of reflections that articulate this core element are the environment and the relationships between society –contemporary art - and habitat. These embrace a reflective of a critical perspective, which signals the situational conditioning.

ART AND HABITAT:

How do contemporary creators face Global Climate Crisis?

Denunciation and action in contemporary Art. The exponents will exhibit works whose contents enable the treatment of an image as a means of denunciation by focusing on the awakening of the sensitive processes of environmental degradation and the impact of human activity on ecosystems.

How to transform reality from the imagination?

The debate of this core element deals with proposals that focus on environmental conditions and are exposed from perspectives which depart from the traditional aesthetic concepts.
